We offer numerous opportunities for our students to obtain undergraduate level research, teaching, and clinical experience in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS). Greater involvement in the department helps you further your critical thinking, leadership skills, self-confidence, and communication abilities. You can also be a part of a research team by volunteering in a lab, participating in our honors program, or working on collaborative research with a faculty member.

SLHS Student Outreach Ambassador

Student Outreach Ambassadors work with our SLHS Outreach Committee and serve as representatives of our department at campus and community events. Student Outreach Ambassadors attend outreach events where they share valuable information about services offered at our community clinics, play a critical role in the recruitment of participants for the innovative projects occurring in our research labs, and share their knowledge and experience about the educational opportunities within our many programs.

SLHS juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. Responsibilities include:

Attending a training session at the onset of each semester.
Signing up for at least at least two outreach events per semester.
Preparing for events by reviewing any pertinent materials or activities.
Bringing assigned materials to outreach events.
Attending designated events for the duration of their time and completing the responsibilities as outline.

Student Outreach Ambassadors serve for a one-year term. The SLHS Outreach Committee will call for applications in the fall semester of each year.

Student organizations

As you think about your future, consider joining one or both of these organizations. They welcome undergraduates and provide insight into professions in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.

National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA)

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is an IU organization for graduate and undergraduate students interested in the study of communication and hearing disorders. In addition to preparing for graduate school and future careers, we focus on service to our community. The group meets once a month and provides opportunities for fundraising, community service, American Sign Language and other club collaborations. NSSLHA is the only official national student association recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Student Academy of Audiology (SAA)

The Student Academy of Audiology is the national student organization of the American Academy of Audiology that serves as a collective voice for students and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in audiology. The SAA introduces students to lifelong involvement in activities that promote and advance the profession of audiology, and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy for the profession and the public we serve.

Student Advisory Board (SAB)

The Student Advisory Board (SAB) aims to keep students updated and engaged with new information and opportunities within the SLHS major. This is primarily achieved through the creation of the “Student Voice” newsletter that is published twice a semester and sent out to all SLHS undergraduate students. The Student Voice newsletter serves as a valuable resource that students can use to learn about SLHS events, faculty members, frequently asked questions, lab opportunities, and advice from SLHS students. Additionally, the SAB organizes events, often in collaboration with other SLHS clubs. These events encourage student involvement in opportunities such as research labs, minors, observations, and other clubs.
