Undergraduate students in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences are eligible to apply for a few awards and research grants. The list of awards that accept self-nominations is provided below, and students are encouraged to apply to the awards for which they meet the criteria. Each award requires its own application. Students who are engaged in research are encouraged to apply to the departmental research scholarships.
Several scholarships and awards are also given each year to students based on their accomplishments. These awards are given at our departmental graduation celebrations.
SLHS awards that accept self-nominations
- Norvelle Student Achievement Award
Eligibility: Graduating seniors who are majoring in SLHS and have high achievement. Achievement may be measured in various ways, such as community involvement, contributions to clinic or research, academic achievement, professional accomplishments, leadership, etc. with an emphasis on speech, language and hearing sciences.
Amount: $1500
Application Deadline: Feb. 15. The application will open one month prior to the deadline.
Apply for the Norvelle Award
- Student Assistance Fund in SLHS
Eligibility: 2 undergraduates majoring in SLHS, with sophomore or junior standing. The intent of the award is to support students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Amount: $500 each
Application Deadline: Feb. 15. The application will open one month prior to the deadline.
Apply for the Student Assistance Fund
- Undergraduate Research Grants
Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are working on research projects with SLHS faculty. These small grants support students who need financial assistance to complete those projects. 4 grants are available.
Amount: up to $500 each.
Application Deadlines: last Friday in October (fall awards) or last Friday in Februrary (spring awards)

The Bob and Martie Crist Award - This award goes to the graduating seniors with the highest GPA.
The Watson Research Award - This award goes to graduating senior(s) with the best senior honors poster.
