Human Communication and Its Disorders

SLHS-S 104

Introduces the scientific foundation of human communication. Mechanisms underlying speaking and listening provide a framework for exploring core topics in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Emphasis given to solving scientific and clinical problems, including how to develop and test hypotheses, analyze data, and investigate how disease and injury affect communication systems.

Introduction to Phonetics for SLHS

SLHS-S 111

Provides an introduction to the sounds of human language and the skills needed to describe speech sounds in the articulatory and acoustic domains. Students will transcribe speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), including both broad and narrow transcription.

Cognition and Communication in Aging

SLHS-S 307

In this course, we review cognitive and communicative changes associated with normal aging as well as with diseases and conditions that are prevalent in the aging population. We discuss methodological issues in research on aging as well as principles for maximizing communication with the elderly population.

Childhood Language

SLHS-S 333

Develops knowledge of how language is acquired by young children. In this course, we examine the major theories and research that are fundamental to answering the question of what infants and young children know about language at different ages.
