Clinical observations are a great way for students to learn more about the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) requires that students pursuing clinical certification in speech-language pathology complete a minimum of 25 hours of observation before or during their graduate program. This requirement may be met in a variety of ways. How to document your hours varies depending on whether the observation takes place inside or outside the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS). Students may also have an option of completing online observations through the Master Clinician Network.
Clinical Opportunities
SLHS department observations
- Planning observations in the IU Speech-Language Clinic
Students may obtain observation hours through the department in the IU Speech-Language Clinic located in the Health Sciences Building at the IU Bloomington/IU Health Regional Academic Health Center.
To sign up for an observation, visit Room C2122 in the IU Speech-Language Clinic. You may come to the clinic between 8am-5pm, request the observation sign-up book and review the available observations and times. Observation sign-up is in-person only at this time.
Carefully review the instructions linked below to prepare for your clinic observations in the IU Speech-Language Clinic.
- HIPAA e-training requirement
All students planning to observe in the clinic must first complete the IU HIPAA e-training module. Click on the link below to complete the training course. Also note that your HIPAA training must be completed annually.
- Getting to the IU Speech-Language Clinic
The Health Sciences Building is located at 2631 East Discovery Parkway, Bloomington, IN 47408.
Students may park in the ST lot with a valid permit directly to the north of the clinic lot. See student parking options at the link below.
Our building is located on the City of Bloomington Transit College Mall line as well as the IU Campus Bus “E” route. Please visit Bloomington Transit or Indiana University Campus Bus Service for schedules and route information.
- Documenting your observations
There are two forms to use for keeping track of all observation hours that take place in the IU Speech-Language Clinic. Both forms can be downloaded below.
-
To count towards your 25 observation hours, every observation you complete within the IU Speech-Language Clinic must be recorded on a separate Guided Observation Form (see link below). You will find detailed instructions on how to complete the form in the IU Speech-Language Clinic Observation Instructions (see "Planning your observations in the IU Speech-Language Clinic" above). You must obtain a signature from the graduate clinician conducting the session on the Guided Observation Form to verify that you completed the observation.
-
You are also required to complete a Guided Observation Summary Form (see link below). The Guided Observation Summary Form provides a concise outline of your observations within the department. This is also the form you use to obtain a signature from the ASHA certified faculty supervisor. You will find detailed instructions on how to complete the form in the IU Speech-Language Clinic Observation Instructions (see "Planning your observations in the IU Speech-Language Clinic" above). If the faculty supervisor is not available at the end of the session you observe, you will turn your completed Guided Observation Summary Form and Guided Observation Form in to the front office and pick up the signed form in 3-5 days following your observation.

Please note that classroom videos can no longer be used to fulfill ASHA requirements.
- Students are responsible for keeping their own records of all clinic observations. The department does not keep a record of undergraduate observation hours. Students admitted to a graduate program in speech-language pathology may be asked to submit documentation of observation hours toward fulfilling ASHA requirements.
-
Outside the department observations
- Planning outside observations
Students may also obtain observation hours outside of the department in a variety of settings including schools, clinics, nursing homes, and hospitals.
-
Given the volume of students, please do not contact IU Bloomington/IU Health Hospital for observation opportunities.
-
Observations at these outside sites should be under the direction of an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist.
-
Students are responsible for coordinating their own outside observations.
-
- Documenting outside observations
Students completing observations outside of the department are encouraged to obtain a formal letter from the certified speech-language pathologist at the outside site on the institution’s letterhead. The certified speech-language pathologist should sign the letter and include their ASHA certification number.
-
Please note that IU faculty are unable to sign off on hours obtained outside the department.
-
Students are responsible for keeping their own records of all clinic observations. The department does not keep a record of undergraduate observation hours. Students admitted to a graduate program in speech-language pathology may be asked to submit documentation of observation hours toward fulfilling ASHA requirements.

Master Clinician Network (MCN) observations
- Accessing & observing in MCN
Master Clinician Network (MCN) is an online platform that may be used to obtain observation hours. Please note that not all graduate programs accept MCN hours or allow all 25 hours via MCN. It is your responsibility to determine if the programs to which you are applying will accept these hours.
Follow instructions below to login to MCN. If you do not have a code from a class, you will be required to pay a subscription fee to complete MCN observations.
- Go to masterclinician.org
- Click the “Join Now” button in the top right corner of the page.
- Select the “Student” option.
- On the payment page, click “I Have a Code” or complete the payment option for an annual subscription.
- Go to your “Videos” section.
- Select the video(s) you wish to view.
- Documenting observations in MCN
If you are completing MCN observations for the ASHA 25-hour guided observation requirement, continue with the following instructions to document your observations:
- After you select the video you wish to view, click on the “Create Assignment” button.
- Select our IU Speech-Language Clinic Director as the faculty member who will approve your observation hours.
- Click the “Assign Now” button.
- When you are done viewing the video, respond to the questions following the video (see below).
Speech and/or language observations completed through the MCN will be reviewed approximately once a month by our Speech-Language Clinic Director. Once approved, you will see the faculty member's name and ASHA number who approved your observation on your observation report. This serves as an eSignature verifying that your guided observation hours are approved.
Students are responsible for keeping their own records of all clinic observations. The department does not keep a record of undergraduate observation hours. Students admitted to a graduate program in speech-language pathology may be asked to submit documentation of observation hours toward fulfilling ASHA requirements.
- Getting help with MCN
For any questions regarding Master Clinician Network, please contact their support directly via their Contact Us messaging portal. The department is unable to provide support for the MCN platform.
Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) program
Our Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) program is designed to help meet the shortage of speech-language pathologists in Indiana schools. IU SLPA program participants receive classroom and experiential training via a 3-credit hour didactic course and a 3-credit hour practicum course.
