Awards and Scholarships

Students (UG, MA, AuD, and PhD) in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences are eligible to apply for a variety of awards and research grants. The list of awards that accept self-nominations is provided below, and students are encouraged to apply to the awards for which they meet the criteria. Each award requires its own application. Students who are engaged in research are encouraged to apply to the departmental research scholarships.

Several scholarships and awards are also given each year to students based on their academic accomplishments. These awards are given at our departmental graduation celebrations.

Graduate Awards and Scholarships

Indiana Lions Club Scholarship (MA and AuD)

Eligibility: MA students (2 awarded) AuD students (1 awarded) who graduated from an Indiana High School and have a commitment to working with individuals with communication differences.

Amount: $1500 each

Application Deadline: Oct. 1

Indiana Lions Club Research Grant (PhD)

Eligibility: One PhD student in need of support for a research project in the area of speech, language, or hearing sciences

Amount: $500 each

Application Deadline: Oct. 1

Dr. Anita Aldrich Graduate Fellowship for Excellence in Treatment of Adult Communication Disorders (MA)

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who are committeed to pursuing a career in the area of adult communication disorders.

Amount: $7500

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Bicentennial Graduate Fellowship (MA)

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who demonstrate academic excellence, compassion for clients, and/or creativity in therapy strategies

Amount: $5000

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Mindy K. Miller Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology (MA)

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who demonstrate potential to make a significant impact on their client(s) by using creative approaches

Amount: $2000

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

S. Kay Burrus Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology (MA)

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who have diverse cultural experiences and financial need

Amount: $2000

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Diane C. Games Award for Excellence in Treatment of Stuttering (MA)

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who are interested in the assessment and treatment of stuttering

Amount: $2500

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Mickelson Award for Students with Financial Need

Eligibility: 1^st year MA students who have financial need. This scholarship is awarded every other year.

Amount: varies, but generally around $1000

Deadline: Feb. 15 of even years

Research Grants (MA and PhD)

Eligibility: MA students and PhD students who are working on research projects with SLHS faculty. These small grants support students who need financial assistance to complete those projects. 6 grants are available to MA students are 4 are available to PhD students

Amount: up to $500 each.

Application Deadlines: Jan. 1 for MA students. PhD award deadlines are yet to be determined.

Humes Travel Award (PhD and postdocs))

Eligibility: PhD students and postdocs who will be presenting at a research conference in the upcoming year. One award is for fall travel and one is for spring travel

Amount: $600 each

Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships

Norvelle Student Achievement Award

Eligibility: Graduating seniors who seniors who are majoring in SLHS and have high achievement. Achievement may be measured in various ways, such as community involvement, contributions to clinic or research, academic achievement, professional accomplishments, leadership, etc. with an emphasis on speech, language and hearing sciences.

Amount: $1500

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Student Assistance Fund in SLHS

Eligibility: 2 undergraduates majoring in SLHS, with sophomore or junior standing. The intent of the award is to support students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Amount: $500 each

Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Undergraduate Research Grants

Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are working on research projects with SLHS faculty. These small grants support students who need financial assistance to complete those projects. 4 grants are available.

Amount: up to $500 each.

Application Deadlines: last Friday in October (fall awards) or last Friday in Februrary (spring awards)

Departmental Awards

The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences also offers a number of awards to recognize graduate student achievements in clinic and research. These awards are selected by the SLHS faculty, and nominations and votes are requested in early spring.

The William H. Earles Award - This award is given to 2 MA students and 1 AuD student who have demonstrated they are disciplined, hard working members of the community with great potential.

The Nicholas Hipskind Outstanding AuD Achievement Award - This award goes to one AuD student who has a strong work ethic and is committed to helping those with hearing loss.

The Psi Iota Xi/ISHA Outstanding Student Clinician Award - One MA and one AuD student receives this award for outstanding performance in the clinic.

The Dorothy Saltzman Outstanding Preschool Clinician Award - This award is given to an MA student who has shown dedication and aptitude in their preschool placement.

The Outstanding ASL GA Award - This award goes to an MA or AuD student who demonstrated strong performance as a graduate assistant within the American Sign Language program.

The Bob and Martie Crist Award - This award goes to the graduating seniors with the highest GPA.

The Watson Research Award - This award goes a graduating senior with the best senior honors poster.

The Judith Gierut Outstanding PhD Research Award - This award goes to a PhD student with the best first- or second- year project.
